Introduction
Michal Pudelka is a Slovak fashion photographer and visual artist born in Bratislava in 1990. He initially studied fashion at Parsons Paris and began using a camera to document his own clothing, a shift that led him from fashion design into photography, collage and video. By the early 2010s his staged group portraits and surreal editorial scenes had established a distinctive visual identity built around repetition, symmetry and youthful unease.
Pudelka’s fashion career expanded through international editorial and campaign work, including photography for Vogue Italia, AnOther, Numéro and other magazines. A major early commercial step came through Valentino, for which he photographed campaigns during the mid-2010s. His images often combine immaculate styling with deliberately strange social arrangements, giving polished fashion a theatrical and occasionally uncanny edge.
In 2017 Pudelka photographed the ERDEM x H&M campaign and lookbook, working within the collaboration’s imagined English-country-house world. His still images complemented Baz Luhrmann’s campaign film and gave the capsule a self-contained cast of characters, extending ERDEM’s romantic visual language to its largest mass-market collaboration.
Design ethos
Pudelka builds photographs through staging. Groups of models, repeated gestures, carefully controlled props and frontal compositions create scenes that feel choreographed while leaving room for humour and social tension. The precision of the arrangement makes small deviations in pose or expression unusually visible.
His background in fashion design informs the treatment of clothing as part of the architecture of the picture. Colour, silhouette and styling are organised across the frame, with analogue texture, collage and video adding another layer of artificiality. The resulting images can feel pristine and slightly disquieting at once.
For ERDEM x H&M, this method suited a campaign built around a fictional social group. The clothes were photographed as part of a collective scene, using repeated figures, interior settings and staged relationships to give the capsule a narrative identity beyond individual product images.
