Introduction
Nicholas Aburn is an American fashion designer and the creative director of Area. Originally from Maryland, he studied at Central Saint Martins in London and began his career in VIP design at Tom Ford. He later worked in New York as a senior womenswear designer at Alexander Wang and in Paris as a senior designer in Balenciaga’s couture studio, building experience across sportswear, celebrity dressing and technically complex evening clothes.
Area appointed Aburn in February 2025 following the departure of co-founder Piotrek Panszczyk, and he began work the following month under chief executive Beckett Fogg. His Spring 2026 debut retained the house’s crystals, denim and appetite for party dressing while introducing shrunken sportswear, altered uniforms, basketball jerseys, cargo trousers and architectural gowns. The collection was received as a confident continuation rather than a wholesale rejection of the founder-era vocabulary.
His second collection, Fall 2026, expanded that range through oversized tailoring, wrapped sweatshirts, vintage silk scarves, lamé and evening pieces informed by early-2000s Balenciaga. Aburn’s role places him at the centre of Area’s first creative succession, responsible for keeping its technical glamour recognisable while making the label function within a different New York wardrobe and studio structure.
Design ethos
Aburn works by crossing ordinary sportswear with the construction and visual force of couture. Hoodies become satin evening pieces, basketball jerseys are spliced into sequined dresses, denim is folded into bows and gala silhouettes, and familiar accessories are enlarged until they act as jewellery or garment structure. The tension allows a collection to move from jeans and sweats to red-carpet dressing without treating them as separate creative worlds.
His Area collections frame glamour as agency, pleasure and preparation rather than a fixed image of luxury. The mix of uptown formality, downtown toughness, underdressing and extravagant surface echoes the social contrasts associated with the nightclub that gave the label its name. Joy and humour are functional design tools, but they are supported by disciplined pattern cutting, fabric manipulation and an understanding of how dramatic pieces must operate on the body.
