Overview
Area was formally launched in New York in 2014 by Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk after the two designers met in Parsons’ Fashion Design and Society MFA programme. The studio developed from experiments with embossed leather, lamé and moulded surfaces into a womenswear and accessories business recognised for crystal chains, sculptural metalwork, coated denim and body-conscious evening clothes. Its name refers both to a space for changing ideas and to Area, the Manhattan nightclub known for themed environments and mixed creative crowds.
The label’s runway identity paired theatrical surface work with a growing group of repeatable products. Crystal-fringed separates, embellished denim, tailoring, jersey, jewellery and accessories enabled Area to move beyond a small experimental studio while retaining textile development as its organising method. In 2021 the company separated made-to-measure couture-format work from ready-to-wear and adopted direct-to-consumer, see-now-buy-now releases, with specialised construction increasingly developed between New York and Italian production partners.
Piotrek Panszczyk left the company in February 2025 after serving as its principal creative director through the founder era. Beckett Fogg remained chief executive, and Nicholas Aburn joined as creative director the following month. Aburn’s Spring 2026 debut returned Area to the New York runway after a season away, retaining crystals, denim and party dressing while introducing a tougher sportswear vocabulary and a new phase of creative authorship.
Philosophy
Area builds collections by exhausting the possibilities of a material or image. Crystal cup chain becomes fringe, armour, jewellery or a printed illusion; denim is cut, woven, bowed and shaped into eveningwear; eyes, bones, hands and thumbprints move between graphic motifs, hardware and garment construction. The studio’s strongest work holds spectacle and product together, using advanced surface techniques on silhouettes that range from compact party dresses to severe tailoring and broad outerwear.
Nightlife is treated less as a nostalgic theme than as a social condition in which glamour, humour, exposure and self-invention coexist. Fogg and Panszczyk established that language through an inclusive New York cast and an interest in the gap between couture craft and commercial dress. Under Nicholas Aburn, the same tension extends into sportswear, altered uniforms and everyday pieces whose closures, proportions and embellishment allow them to move between morning, street and night.
