Introduction
Peter Hawkings is a British designer and studio leader whose career is closely tied to Tom Ford’s work at Gucci and the development of the Tom Ford menswear business. He joined Gucci in 1998 as a menswear design assistant and progressed within the studio during Ford’s creative direction.
Hawkings left Gucci in 2006 to help establish Tom Ford menswear, overseeing design, development and production across tailoring, sportswear, leather goods and accessories. He later became senior vice president of menswear. Appointed Tom Ford creative director in 2023, he presented two principal runway collections and several pre-collections before departing on 22 July 2024.
Design ethos
Hawkings’s practice is grounded in luxury menswear construction: narrow tailoring, controlled sportswear, precise leather goods and close attention to fabrication and finish. Much of his long work with Ford was collaborative, conducted inside an established studio and brand system.
As creative director, he pursued continuity through velvet suiting, abbreviated dresses, polished eveningwear and 1970s references. The work demonstrated technical assurance and a detailed knowledge of the archive, while its proximity to Ford’s language also defined the limits of the brief tenure.
