Introduction
Sophia Kokosalaki was a Greek fashion designer known for draped construction, classical references and an independent London-based label. Trained in Athens and at Central Saint Martins, she developed a practice that moved between her own collections, international commissions and creative roles within larger fashion businesses.
Diesel appointed Kokosalaki to lead Diesel Black Gold womenswear in June 2009. Her first design season was Fall/Winter 2010; her final season was Spring/Summer 2013, presented in New York in September 2012 after her departure had been announced that August.
The appointment was specific to Black Gold womenswear. Menswear remained studio-led, and the evidence does not support extending her title to Diesel mainline.
Design ethos
Kokosalaki built garments through drape, twist and controlled asymmetry, often allowing fabric to gather around the body with the tension of ancient dress translated into contemporary construction. Leather, metallic detail and precise pleating gave the work a harder counterweight.
At Diesel Black Gold, that language met denim, biker references and an industrial casualwear vocabulary. The result placed sensual movement and fitted structure inside a more direct runway system without dissolving the category boundary between Black Gold and Diesel mainline.
