Overview
Paris Fashion Week, officially established in 1973 by the Fédération Française de la Couture, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the international fashion calendar. Hosted semiannually in Paris (for womenswear in spring and fall, with separate weeks for menswear and haute couture), it carries forward a legacy of haute couture traditions dating back to the mid-19th century while presenting the cutting edge of contemporary design. Paris Fashion Week showcases the collections of the world’s most prestigious luxury maisons—Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, among others—alongside avant-garde designers, thereby blending heritage and innovation.
Historically, Paris set the standard in fashion: from Christian Dior’s 1947 “New Look” which revolutionized post-war style to Yves Saint Laurent’s provocative 1971 ‘Liberation’ collection, the city has been the stage for fashion’s defining moments. The week’s runway shows are renowned for grand, theatrical presentations (such as spectacular sets created by brands like Chanel or Alexander McQueen’s legendary Paris shows). Beyond the runway, Paris Fashion Week is a huge cultural and economic event, drawing international press, buyers, celebrities, and tastemakers. Its enduring status as fashion’s foremost event is reflected in the global influence of the trends and creative visions unveiled there each season.
