Overview
Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester launched her eponymous label in 1985 with her photographer husband Patrick Robyn. A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the influential Antwerp Six, she quickly gained recognition for poetic, darkly romantic clothing. The brand presented its first Paris fashion show in 1991 and introduced menswear in 1996. Over the years it expanded to include shoes, accessories and jewellery, opening flagship stores in Antwerp, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Although Demeulemeester retired in 2013, the house continues under new creative direction and Italian ownership, maintaining its avant‑garde vision.
Known for elegant tailoring, stark silhouettes and a moody palette, the label exudes a gothic yet glamorous aesthetic. Its designs often juxtapose soft fabrics with sharp lines, creating a sense of tension and romance.
Philosophy
Ann Demeulemeester’s philosophy embraces an intelligent, independent approach to fashion. She rises above trends to craft an evolving system of dressing that invites personal interpretation, blending masculine and feminine elements through flowing fabrics, tailored jackets and layered styling.
Her work reflects poetry and melancholy, drawing inspiration from art, music and literature. Integrity and authenticity underpin the brand’s ethos. Demeulemeester values independence and creates garments that resonate emotionally rather than commercially.
